SDN/VirtualizationGNS3 Virtualized SDN Testbed with Ryu Controller & IPFire
- Challenge
- A student required an OpenFlow SDN testbed with stateful firewalling for academic thesis research. Their local workstation lacked the compute, RAM, and nested virtualization needed to run GNS3 alongside concurrent appliance VMs without system instability.
- What we did
- Prepared and tuned a remote GNS3 environment with KVM hardware acceleration and dedicated memory allocation. Pre-staged the exact requested runtime tooling: containerized Ryu SDN controller, IPFire firewall image, lightweight Alpine Linux server templates, VPCS user nodes, and virtual hubs for Wireshark capture boundaries. Tested hypervisor passthrough and handed over an isolated sandbox with full administrative access for independent topology design and testing.
- Result
- Minimal emulation crashes or hardware constraints during testing. The student designed their full topology, executed OpenFlow benchmarks, and completed their final-year defense on schedule.
